Classical Poetry at Swavesey Primary School

During September, the whole school has been having fun exploring poetry. Our Reception classes recited and performed a poem called Choppety Chop, whilst children from Years 1 to 6 developed their knowledge of Classical Poetry. Years 1 and 2 learnt the poem, The Owl and the Pussy Cat, and Years 3 and 4, The Jumblies, both written by the poet Edward Lear. Years 5 and 6 investigated the complex but fun vocabulary in Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll.

The classical poems were used to scaffold and support our children in writing nonsense poems of their own following a similar style. The children were resilient in learning their lines and accompanying actions and then performing in a special assembly in front of the school. It was great fun to watch!
